Course Description
This eight-hour, in-depth, seminar is intended for employers’ supervisory personnel and employees directly involved with excavation work covering excavation hazards and all MIOSHA Part 9 requirements, providing for increased hazard recognition and awareness and greater
understanding of excavation protective requirements. The program will cover:
  • Excavation cave-in hazards
  • Struck-by equipment and material hazards
  • Underground utility hazards
  • Overhead hazards (powerlines)
  • Underground utility clearance requirements
  • Hazardous atmospheres
  • Part 9 definitions
  • Competent person role
  • Qualified person role
  • Registered Professional Engineer role
  • Excavations deeper than 20 feet design requirements
  • Access and egress requirements
    • Ladders and stairs
    • Structural ramps
    • Earthen ramps
  • Cave-in protective system requirements
    • Sloping and benching sidewalls
    • Trench boxes and shields
    • Shoring systems
  • Water control issues
  • Inspections
  • Emergency planning and response
  • Part 9 Soils Classification definitions
  • Use of Part 9 Table 1
  • Hands-on soils classification exercise.
