Course Overview:

This MCOLES approved course examines the principles and practices of community policing and how they differ from traditional crime-control models. Participants will explore strategies for meaningful community engagement, collaborative problem-solving, and increasing trust, legitimacy, and accountability within policing systems.

The course emphasizes practical application, ethical decision-making, and real-world case examples relevant to today’s policing and community contexts.

Course Covers:

  • Foundations of Community Policing: History, principles, and differences from traditional enforcement models
  • Community Engagement Strategies: Building relationships, trust, and collaboration with diverse communities
  • Problem Identification & Problem-Solving: Applying data-informed and community-centered approaches

  • Accountability & Oversight: Transparency, legitimacy, and strengthening police-community trust
